# Document ownership

Document ownership identifies who is responsible for a knowledge source.

Ownership helps make access intentional. It gives teams a way to reason about who can manage, share, or review a source that may later be used by the [AI Knowledge Base](/about/platform/ai-knowledge-base.md).

## Why this matters

Governed AI needs more than a pile of documents. It needs responsibility, scope, and evidence. Ownership helps clarify who is accountable for a source and how that source should be handled.
