# Organizations

An organization is the top-level governance boundary in Katara.

Organization scope matters because Katara uses it to reason about which users, applications, sources, tools, and traces belong together. This scope is part of how the platform keeps AI interactions controlled and auditable.

## What organizations help govern

Organizations help define:

* who can use Katara;
* which knowledge sources and collections belong to the organization;
* which users or applications are in scope for a workflow;
* which activity should appear together in audit or trace evidence.

## Related concepts

Organization-level access is different from document-level control. Individual knowledge sources can still have their own ownership, sharing, and visibility rules.
